R' Yosef Karo (1488-1575) was a Sephardic halakhic authority and the author of the Shulchan Aruch, the most authoritative code of Jewish law. Born in Spain and exiled during the Inquisition, he settled in Safed, Ottoman Palestine, where he compiled his monumental works including the Beit Yosef and the Shulchan Aruch. His codification of halakhah became the standard reference for Jewish legal practice across communities worldwide.
