If tzitzit strings come undone from their twisting and become sixteen strands, are the tzitzit valid?

Synopsis

If strings unravel from their twisting so that eight become sixteen, they are valid as long as enough of the original twist remains (kedi anivah). The Rambam's position makes this easier since he does not require shezurah at all.
