R' Moshe Isserles (1520-1572) was a leading Ashkenazi halakhic authority and the most influential figure in establishing Ashkenazi Jewish law as a standardized system. He authored the Mappah (Tablecloth), a comprehensive gloss on R' Yosef Karo's Shulchan Aruch that incorporated Ashkenazi customs and rulings alongside Sephardic ones, fundamentally shaping Jewish legal practice for subsequent generations. His works include the Darkei Moshe, responsa, and numerous halakhic rulings that remain authoritative in Ashkenazi communities.
