When entering a synagogue for a personal need (such as to call someone), what must one do?

To avoid appearing as though one entered the synagogue purely for personal benefit, one must first read or learn something (or ask a child to recite a verse), and only afterward call the person. Sitting briefly is also sufficient. The required duration is debated.
